FOOD ASSESSMENT, PLAN OF ACTION,AND SOLUTIONS

PHASE 1: FOOD ASSESSMENT

In order to assess how much of Westerns campus suffers from food insecurity, we decided to create a survey. This survey will go out to second year students, as well as senior status students. Second year students are coming out of living in the dorms, where they are required to have a meal plan. When you leave the dorms, you have the option of having a meal plan, but most students don't pursue one because of the costs. This means they are on their own for food access. We chose senior status students because we felt it would be an appropriate population to mix with our second year students.

We also hope to participate in the HOPE Lab National Survey which will assess the whole Western Campus. This will be a more in-depth and detailed survey.

PHASE 2: AGGREGATE AND IDENTIFY NEED

PHASE 3: POTENTIAL SUBSEQUENT SOLUTIONS

“I have worked in survey research here on campus for the past 9 years and I don’t know of any data on food insecurity with students.”  ~Beth Hartsoch, WWU Institutional Research
